Dooba Reviews Tue, 17 May 2016 03:12:13 +0000 en-US hourly 1 3 Steps to Great Gelato Fri, 19 Feb 2016 16:48:09 +0000 Gelato is by far one of my favorite desserts.

You just can’t beat that smooth, creamy, rich texture and the burst of cold flavor.

Here are the 3 Steps to making amazing gelato right at home.

#1: Use the right ingredients

A true gelataio (ice-cream maker) pays close attention to detail and only uses the highest quality ingredients.

In Italy, gelato is considered a “Real Food.”

A basic recipe uses whole fresh eggs, whole high-quality milk,  and a small amount of sugar.

Depending on the flavor, fresh nuts, fruit juice and puree (from the freshest fruit, of course), or dark chocolate and cacao powder are added.

Very little added sugar is needed in gelato, and the flavors are so vivid and intense that a modest-sized portion will leave you satisfied.

Authentic gelato does not contain fillers, coloring, additives, or emulsifiers.

When making gelato at home, think like a gelataio.

Don’t settle for the 2% milk in your refrigerator or flavor extracts.

Splurge on the high quality, real ingredients.

Trust me, you’ll taste the difference.

#2: The right recipe

Your recipe will vary depending on your flavor preference, but no matter what type you make, start with a good base.

A basic Crema Gelato base contains nothing more than milk and/or cream, egg yolks, sugar, and perhaps a pinch of salt.

This you cook into a custard, then cool in an ice bath before mixing in the flavorings.

Whether adding a fresh raspberry puree or cacao powder and espresso, it’s always a good idea to pour your mixture through a strainer or cheesecloth to strain out any seeds or chunks.

What’s left is a smooth custard that will make the creamiest, most decadent gelato.

Add it to your gelato maker, and you’ll enjoy fresh, smooth gelato in a matter of minutes.

#3: The right machine

It is said the Italians can taste the difference between an authentic gelato and an industrial version.

The perfect gelato is creamy and rich, yet light.  Gelato has much less air whipped into it than ice cream.

When choosing your gelato maker, you’ll want to look for one that specializes in gelato.

There are many good ice cream makers in the market, but if you’re looking to make authentic gelato, look no further than the Italian made Lello frozen dessert maker.

Lello makes all stainless steel, self refrigerating gelato machines that make gelato like you wouldn’t believe!

With the right ingredients, you’ll think you’re back in Italy.

Using the Lello Musso Pola 5030, you’ll have the best gelato frozen and ready to serve in a mere 20 minutes (30 minutes with the Lello 4080 Musso Lussino).

Lello makes two machines that are perfect for home use.

The Lello 4080 Musso Lussino has a 1.5 quart capacity and fits well in a kitchen pantry.

The Lello Musso Pola 5030 has a large 2 quart capacity and is the smallest of the commercial machines.

You’ll want a more permanent place or roll away cart for this one.

Whether you choose the Musso Lussino or Musso Pola, you’ll get smooth, high-quality gelato every time.

So there you have it!

The 3 steps to the best gelato.

Start with the fresh, real ingredients, follow a trusty recipe, then mix and cool your gelato in a high quality, self-refrigerating frozen dessert maker.

Now go try out your favorite flavors and have fun!

Comparing the Lello 4080 Musso Lussino vs the Musso Pola 5030 Ice Cream Maker Wed, 03 Feb 2016 19:58:16 +0000 Lello 4080 Musso Lussino

If you’re serious about making fantastic homemade ice cream, then you’ve probably heard of Lello.

And you probably already know that Lello brand ice cream makers are among the best.

They’re top of the line, powerful  machines that make delicious, parlor-style frozen desserts.

But which Lello should you get?

Let’s take a look at both the Lello Musso Pola 5030 and the Lello 4080 Musso Lussino and see if we can make that decision a little easier.

First off, Why a Lello?

When we think of gelato, we think of Italy.

Italians know how to make great gelato…and they know how to make the best gelato and ice-cream makers.

Both the Lello 5030 and the Lello 4080 make smooth, creamy gelato, ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt.

How do they do it?

It’s all in the construction.

The Lello boasts a strong motor that’s built to last, all stainless steel construction, and more than adequate refrigeration.

All this works together freeze the ice cream surprisingly fast, churning along the way, resulting in very small ice crystals.

Small ice crystals mean smooth, creamy, decadent ice cream.

Rare Quality:  All Stainless Steel Construction

Most ice cream makers have removable aluminum bowls.

Not the Lello.

Everything is stainless steel:  the housing, the bowl, the blade.

Since the bowl is carved into the top of the machine, there is no gap letting cold air escape.

This means your ice cream will freeze better and faster, creating smaller ice crystals and a smoother taste.

What’s the Difference? 4080 Musso Lussino vs. Musso Pola 5030

The Lello machines are very similar in quality of construction, durability, and, of course, making great ice cream!

You really can’t go wrong.

However, there are some differences to consider:

  • Shape and Size
  • Capacity
  • How long till the ice cream is ready?
  • Intentions–home use or commercial?

Lello Musso Pola 5030 Ice cream and Gelato Maker

Shape and Size

You can see from the pictures that the Lello Musso Pola 5030 is rectangular, while the 4080 Musso Lussino is oblong or oval shaped.

The Lello 5030 measures 20 inches wide x 14 inches deep x 12.2 inches high.

Since the Musso Pola 5030 weighs 68 pounds, you may want to either keep it in a permanent location, or keep it on a stainless steel wheeled cart for easy access and storage.

The Lello 4080 measures 12 inches wide x 18 inches deep x 11 inches high.

It weighs in at about 38 pounds.

Still heavy, but very manageable.

This one could fit on a pantry shelf.

The Musso Pola 5030 has a large 2 quart capacity.

The 4080 Musso Lussino is not far behind with a 1.5 quart capacity.

How Long Till It’s Ready?

The Lello Musso Pola 5030 mixes and freezes ice cream or gelato in about 20 minutes.

It also has a very high rate of output.

That means it can make 3 batches or up to 6 quarts of ice cream, frozen yogurt, or gelato in an hour!

The Lello 4080 Musso Lussino makes frozen desserts in about 30 minutes.

Although that’s slightly longer than the 5030, the Muso Lussino can still make 2 batches or up to 3 quarts an hour!

And there’s no down time between batches on either machine!

Simply remove the ice cream from your first batch, add your next mix, and start it up again.

You can make a variety of flavors back to back for the perfect ice cream bar that will please all your guests.

Home-use or Commercial?

Both the Lello 5030 and the Lello 4080 make fabulous ice cream for home use, and the Lello Musso Pola 5030 also pulls its weight in commercial ice cream shops.

While the Lello 4080 is almost professional grade, its smaller capacity makes it perfect for homes.

The Lello 5030 is a commercial machine, but on the small side.

With its higher capacity and rate of output, many restaurant and shop owners find it does a fantastic job of keeping up with all those ice cream-loving customers.

Most shops make several batches and keep them in the freezer for future use.

Since the Lello 5030 is on the smaller end of commercial ice cream makers, many choose to buy it for use at home as well.

Here are few things to consider:

  • Consider your space and the size of the machine. Do you have good place to store it? For the Lello 5030, do you have counter top space or room for a wheeled cart in a pantry or closet? The Lello 4080 is smaller to handle and does fine stored on a shelf or in a cupboard.
  • How often do you think you’ll use your Lello ice cream maker?  Since it’s so fast and easy, many reviewers find they use it more frequently than they originally thought.
  • How many guests do you usually serve in a sitting?  It’s easy to make ice cream ahead and keep it in your freezer, but if you host a large crowd, consider the Lello 5030.

These machines are so well-made, that you can’t go wrong with either pick.

The price for the Lello 4080 right around $700, while the Lello 5030 costs just under $1,200.

Here’s to happy ice cream making!  Cheers!

Lello Musso Pola 5030 Ice Cream & Gelato Machine Review Fri, 29 Jan 2016 04:13:47 +0000 Meet the Lello Musso Pola 5030 Ice Cream & Gelato Maker.

We like to call her the Queen of Ice Cream Makers.  Why?

Because whether you intend to make frozen desserts for home use or commercial, the Lello Musso Pola is the best of the best!

What Makes the Lello Musso Pola 5030 the best Ice Cream Maker?

We’ll start with just a few key features:

  • The Lello Musso Pola is an all stainless steel construction.  This includes the bowl and blade.  Since most home ice cream makers have aluminum bowls, this gives Lello a major advantage over the others.
  • Since the bowl is not removable, there is no gap letting cold air escape.  This means your ice cream will freeze better and faster and taste smoother.
  • Large 2 quart capacity
  • High rate of output: The Musso Pola 5030 can make up to 6 quarts of ice cream, frozen yogurt, or gelato in an hour!  Make a variety of flavors back to back for the perfect ice cream bar.
  • Ice cream goes from pouring in mix to frozen and ready to eat in a mere 20 minutes.
  • Made to last in Italy.  The Lello Musso Pola is solid and sturdy.
  • Self-contained freezing unit keeps your frozen desserts frozen even after they’re ready.

And most importantly…

  • The Musso Pola makes fabulous frozen desserts! Rich and creamy ice cream, not too light, not too dense.  Gelato that tastes like it’s straight out of Italy.  Perfect fruity sorbets.

Watch it in action again making a Strawberry Sorbet, then a Strawberry Yogurt

Here’s What Reviewers on Amazon think:

“A simply outstanding piece of equipment. Above all else is the texture of any ice cream, sorbet, gelato, etc. It is instantly ready to scoop or quenelle after 20minutes and being able to turn off the chill button at anytime allows one to remove all of the product smoothly…This machine is a professional chefs dream come true.”

“Let me tell you guys, you will not find a commercial grade ice cream machine that would freeze 2 quarts of ice cream in under 20 minutes that is priced under $1,500 other than the Lello Musso Pola 5030.”

“This machine is more than what I expected. If you’re a serious home cook or looking to make ice cream to sell and do not want to spend more than $1,300, then this is the machine to get.”

What About the Size?

The Lello Musso Pola 5030 is the smallest model of commercial ice cream makers, making it perfect for either commercial or home use.  As you can imagine then, this is a large machine.

  • It measures approximately 20 x 14 x 12.2 inches.
  • It weighs approximately 68 pounds.
  • It uses 110 voltage and has a standard US plug.

You’ll want to have easy access to this machine.

One option is to give it a permanent location on a countertop.

Another brilliant idea is to keep it on a stainless steel wheeled cart, making it easy to roll out for use, then roll back into the pantry or closet for storage. Then you don’t need another person to help you lift it.

If the Pola 5030 is just too big for your space, consider the Lello Musso Lussin0 4080. It makes delicious ice cream just like the Pola 5030, but has a 1.5 quart capacity and is a little smaller.

Is it Easy to Clean?

Yes!  Some are initially concerned about clean-up since the stainless steel bowl is not removable.

They soon learn that clean-up is a breeze.

There are no seams or crevices since the bowl is actually part of the whole unit.  Simply wipe clean with a kitchen towel or sponge and soapy water.

Most people report cleaning the bowl takes no longer than 2 minutes.

To make clean-up even easier, let the machine sit for a few minutes so the ice cream residue melts.

Speed, Capacity, and Quality really take the cake, er ice-cream

Other gelato makers can only bust out 1.5 quarts per hour of ice cream or gelato. The Pola 3050 gets up to 6 quarts of ice cream, frozen yogurt, or gelato in an hour.

It’s the best option for a self-refrigerating ice-cream maker because of it’s speed and capacity and industrial strength quality.

Compared to other ice-cream & gelato makers, the blade is not plastic, it’s stainless steel which means it’s tough and will last a long, long time.

Tips from Experienced Users

How hard do you like your ice cream?

When using the Lello Musso Pola 3050, your ice cream is frozen and ready to consume in a mere 20 minutes.

However, this is near soft serve consistency.  If you want it firmer,  you can adjust the hardness of your ice cream by increasing the amount of time you leave it in the Musso Pola.

The most common  option is removing your ice cream  and storing it in the freezer while you make your next batch.  Leaving it a few hours or overnight will freeze it as hard as what you buy from the store (but much better tasting!)

Do you need to chill the ingredients?

No, since this machine is self-refrigerating, there is no need to chill the ingredients.

If you want to speed up the freezing process and end up with a firmer ice cream, try chilling your mixture and see how you like it.

Another tip is to put any stir-ins (cookie pieces, nuts, fruit pieces, etc) in the freezer to chill them while your ice cream is freezing. Toward the end of the cycle, pour in the cold additions.

Comparing the JumpSport 350 vs. JumpSport 350PRO Sat, 23 Jan 2016 22:53:59 +0000 jumpsport rebounder

What’s the difference between the JumpSport 350 and the 350PRO?

The 350 and 350PRO are almost identical except for one key feature.

Whether this feature makes a difference for you will depend on how you want to use your JumpSport rebounder.

Why get a JumpSport Rebounder?

As the video above shows, they’re quiet, they’re easier on the joints than other stiffer mini-trampolines,

The 350 vs the 350Pro

JumpSport has a great model, the 350 which comes with the similar but more expensive 350Pro.

So what’s the difference?

The difference is in the elastics.

The Pro has 36 EnduroLast cords which are rated 4 million cycles!

That’s a lot of rebounding.

The standard 350 sports EnduroLast 3 elastic cords which are tested to “millions of bounces.”

The standard 350 has only 30 cords compared to the 36 cords on the 350PRO.

But there’s more to consider…

But is the 350PRO worth the price difference?

The 350PRO will definitely set you back a pretty penny compared to the 350. The difference is about $80-90, but there are some things to consider.

How many people will be sharing the use of the rebounder?

The more people using it in your family, the more use and wear and tear will occur. The 350PRO is made to withstand that with the capability of the elastic cords lasting twice as long as the standard 350.

Weight Consideration

The 350PRO’s weight capacity is 50 pounds greater than the standard 350 which comes in at 250 pounds.

More Support, and Longer Lasting

Selecting the Best JumpSport 350

If you’ve got a lot of people using it, need the extra strength and capacity, or are a fitness establishment, the Pro is definitely the way to go.

If you’re a casual rebounder, the standard 350 is a great and popular choice.

Hard to go wrong with just a great exercise tool.

Cuisinart ICE-100 vs Whynter ICM-200LS Tue, 22 Dec 2015 23:18:49 +0000 Looking for the right ice-cream maker can be tough, but narrowing it down to the Cuisinart and the Whynter can make it easy depending on what you need.

We’ve reviewed the Whynter Ice Cream Maker and the Cuisinart ICE-100 individually, but now we take a quick look comparing both.

The Cuisinart ICE-100 Ice Cream and Gelato Maker

Cuisinart ICE Gelato Maker

The Cuisinart is a great ice-cream and gelato maker for quick batches. With a self-refrigerating mechanism (compressor), you don’t have to pre-chill your bowl, or freeze your ice-cream for hours for it to set.

The Whynter ICM-200LS Ice Cream and Gelato Maker

Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker, 2.1-Quart

The Whynter is a workhorse and a big contender. Let’s see how these two awesome ice-cream and gelato makers compare.

How they compare on Price

The Cuisinart ICE-100 will set you back about $299. It’s definitely not cheap, but considering it has its own compressor, making ice cream in 40-60 minutes depending on your need, it’s a bargain for the convenience.

The Whynter ICM-200LS is priced much higher at about $359.

So why the difference? The Cuisinart is more compact, but not by much, the design makes it look small by comparison, but it’s pretty large.

The Cuisinart doesn’t have as elegant of an interface (control panel options), but that can be a matter of preference, so why the difference in price?

It comes down to the next item…

How they compare on Capacity

The Whynter ICM-200LS has almost twice the capacity as the Cuisinart.

The Cuisinart will produce 1 to 1.5 quarts of ice cream or gelato. The Whynter can produce 2.1 quarts.

Which do you get? The answer is how much do you like ice cream…

Seriously though, if you’re planning on having parties or have a large family, the Whynter is definitely the way to go as you can get twice as much ice cream in half the time.

If you’re just looking to make ice-cream for yourself, and one other, the Cuisinart is a great choice.

How they compare on Quality

Both are built to last with an elegant design. You won’t be disappointed.

The Cuisinart and the Whynter both have plastic mixing blades which work just fine the quantity of ice cream they produce. For its size, the Cuisinart does put out a good deal of noise, but hey, noise vs ice-cream in under an hour, I’ll take the ice cream.

What customers are Saying

About the Whynter

“This is major improvement over my existing ice cream maker with an internal refrigeration unit. It is quieter (the main noise comes from the gearbox driving the dasher). The capacity is greater (2.1 quarts / 1 liter vs. about 1.25 quarts for the old unit). It freezes really FAST.”

“The unit is quieter than I expected, but certainly isn’t silent. You can hear the motor turning the bowl and there’s also a “white” noise that comes from the compressor”

“The best Ice Cream Maker for the home you can buy”

About the Cuisinart ICE-100

“Cuisinart has taken the ICE-50BC and improved upon it’s design shortcomings. the biggest improvement is moving the drive system from the overhead arm to underneath the bowl. This system now resembles the much more expensive Lello unit but with a removable bowl. This unit also has a newly redesigned Ice Cream Paddle and includes a Gelato Paddle as well.”

“Really like it. Slightly noisy but quality of ice cream is delicious.”

“Really like it. Slightly noisy but quality of ice cream is delicious.”

Where to find them

The Cuisinart ICE-100 has over 415 reviews on Amazon, and the newer Whynter has over 80 reviews and is catching up quick.

Self-Refrigerating Ice-cream maker vs NonRefrigerating Sat, 05 Dec 2015 06:21:28 +0000 When choosing an ice-cream machine, there’s an important decision to make:

To get a self-refrigerating or freezer bowl (old-style) ice-cream machine.

The decision comes down to time and convenience. Self-refrigerating ice-cream makers like the Whynter and the Breville ice cream maker can get you from start to finish with excellent tasting ice-cream in 40 minutes.

“Old-style” or non-refrigerating ice-cream makers require hours of refrigeration, even twenty-four hours in many cases to refreeze the bowl.

A self-refrigerating ice-cream maker requires no such pre-refrigeration of the bowl. It’s like having a mini-freezer plus ice-cream maker.

If a self-refrigerating is so great, why get a non refrigerating ice cream maker?

It comes down to cost. A self-refrigerating costs a lot more upfront, but is earned back in time. Non-refrigerating require more than ten times the time with the freezing that is required.

Read our review of the Whynter Ice-cream maker here.

Read our review of the Breville ice cream maker here.

Self-refrigerating units also make gelato. Check out our review of the Delonghi Gelato Maker.

Whynter vs Lello Musso Lussino Ice Cream and Gelato Machine Wed, 02 Dec 2015 20:10:03 +0000 Lello 4080 Musso Lussino

The Lello 4080 Musso Lussino Ice Cream and Gelato Machine (pictured above)

Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker, 2.1-Quart

…and The Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker (pictured above).

Capabilities of both the Whynter and Lello Ice Cream Maker

First, of course they are both refrigerated ice cream makers.

This means no need to freeze a bowl for 24 hours, no ice and rock salt, and no need to chill your mixture before starting.

Both can make ice cream, gelato, sorbet, frozen yogurt, or frozen drinks such as strawberry daiquiri and pina colada.

Both have a motor protection function which stops the motor from churning when the mix becomes solid.  This prevents any damage or overheating to the motor.

Both have an Extended Cooling Function that keeps the ice cream frozen after mixing is complete.

Since the ice cream makers are both refrigerated, you can make one batch after the other, creating as many flavors in a row as you want. No down time required.

What gives the Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker its kick?

The Whynter is one of the classiest ice-cream makers available.

Classy, and attention to every detail in the design really show though with the finished product.

This is something you wouldn’t mind showing off in your kitchen.

The Whynter has a stainless steel exterior with an LCD control panel, showcasing an electric timer and temperature display.

The Whynter Ice Cream maker is simple to use.

It has three modes:

  • Ice Cream Mode mixes and freezes
  • Mixing Only Mode for mixing without cooling
  • Cooling Only Mode – After the ice cream is ready, the Whynter automatically enters cooling mode to keep the frozen ice cream from melting.

The Whynter turns your mixture into frozen ice cream in a mere 30 to 60 minutes, not far off from the Lello’s 30 minutes.

While the Lello has a stainless steel churn blade, the Whynter’s blade is plastic.

That being said, it is still durable and makes amazing ice cream.

Both the blade and the bowl are removable for easy scooping and cleaning.

Let the customers tell you why the Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker is a great choice.

Amazon reviewers give it 4.9 out of 5 stars from 45 customer reviews.

“I highly recommend this machine to ANYONE. Even if you are hesitant and have never made homemade ice cream before, this is the machine for you.”

“Boy, you talk about creamy and smooth textures for the first time in an home electric ice cream maker, I wish I could give it 8 stars I guarantee.”

And you’ll have plenty of this smooth, creamy ice cream to share (or not!) since it has a large capacity 2.1 quart bowl.

You can get this for around $297 at Amazon—a good deal for a machine of this caliber.

Why The Lello 4080 Musso Lussino Ice Cream and Gelato Machine?

You can tell at first glance that the Lello is professional grade. All its parts are top notch, high quality.

It boasts a stainless steel housing, stainless steel bowl (which is very hard to come by), and a stainless steel churn blade. This baby comes from Italy, and it is made tough.

The lid and blade are both removable, but unlike the Whynter, the bowl is not.

You’ll have to use warm, soapy water or a sponge to clean it.

As you would expect for a top professional appliance, the Lello Musso Lussino weighs in at 38 lbs, significantly more than Whynter’s 24.25 lbs., so you’ll want to find a good spot for this ice cream/gelato machine.

This machine also has a 1.5 quart large capacity bowl.

But enough of that! What about the gelato and ice cream it makes?

Have you travelled to Europe and tasted the gelato there? The Italian-made Musso Lussino makes gelato that tastes just like artisan gelato.

Many machines either make Ice Cream well, or they make Gelato well, but the Lello Musso Lussino is one of the few that can do both and make it great every single time. It’s what the Pro’s use at home to make Gelato and Ice Cream.

Reviewers on Amazon agree:

“I had not had really good, knock-your-socks off gelato since I was last in Sicily — until now.”

“If you’re considering an Italian gelato machine, then the names “Nemox” and “Musso” come to mind. Both companies fabricate machines for home and professional use, and I’ve had several over the years. By far, if you are looking for quality and authentic Italian gelato texture and ice-crystallization, look no further than this machine by Musso. It’s made better than anything by Nemox (which uses plastic and/or silicone parts that wear down over time.) The Lussiano looks beautiful in your kitchen, makes a fine array of desserts, and will last for years. Trust me though, it won’t sit idle.”

The Lello 4080 Musso Lussino Ice Cream Maker can be found on Amazon for $699. It’s obvious this machine is made to last, and it makes amazing frozen desserts. Go ahead and indulge—you won’t regret it.

Two of the Best, but which gelato/ice cream maker is best?

Whether you choose the Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker or the Lello 4080 Musso Lussino Ice Cream and Gelato Machine you can’t go wrong.

But if you’re looking for larger capacity, the Whynter wins out with 2.1 quarts.

So why go for the Lello? It’s Italian made. Home of some of the best Gelato out there. It’s also more industrial with it’s steel mixing blade and will last a long time.

Whynter ICM-200LS Ice-cream maker (Review) Thu, 19 Nov 2015 22:26:30 +0000 Which is the best ice cream maker?

With a standard ice cream maker—even quality ones—you have to plan 24 hours in advance, make room in your freezer, and pre-freeze the mixing bowl.

Even if you like to plan ahead, you’re still not able to make more than one batch in a day.

I looked at several self-refrigerating ice cream makers and found the one that is truly a cut above the rest.

Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker, 2.1-Quart

“Oh, Whynter, you saved us! My hero!”

The Whynter Ice Cream Maker with built-in freezer compressor actually does save you…from planning ahead and from running out of homemade ice cream too darn fast.

Whynter Ice Cream Maker Save you Time

The Whynter compressor freezer is powerful.  So powerful it freezes a batch of ice cream in just 30 to 60 minutes.

So powerful it allows for continuous use, which means you can make batch after batch with no down time for your party.

It means you can make as many flavors as you want.

The Whynter ICM-200LS has a large capacity bowl which makes up to 2 quarts in a single batch. That’s almost twice as large as some of the other gelato and ice cream makers out there.

But don’t feel like you have to. If you’re making several flavors or trying out a new, unique recipe, it still works great to make a smaller amount.

What about Other Frozen Desserts?

The Whynter Ice Cream maker can easily make not only ice cream, but also gelato, and sorbet. We love gelato makers, and this one can make some great gelato.

The Whynter can also make frozen drinks such as Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris.

It comes with several recipes to try.  Or make up your favorite!

How Long Does it Take to Make Ice Cream with the Whynter?

The Whynter Ice Cream maker is simple to use.  It has three modes:

Juicing vs Blending a Smoothie Fri, 12 Dec 2014 20:03:06 +0000 Breville Masticating JuicerIf you’re going through the effort to blend a smoothie or make a juice, it’s good to know which option produces the best results for your body, and the answer might surprise you.

Getting enough greens?  Juice for health.  Green smoothies.  Sneak in the kale, chard, spinach…

But which is best?  Juicing or Blending?

First off…

The Benefits of Juicing

  • Releases the enzymes and nutrients so they are quickly and easily absorbed.
  • Drinking green juices (from cucumbers, leafy greens, celery, and other low-sugar vegetables) is a quick way to alkalize your body.
  • Juices are easy for your body to digest.
  • Juicing can cleanse your body, helping to heal the gut and brighten your complexion.
  • There are a few types of juicers out there, including masticating and centrifugal.  Check out our list of top 10 juicers to help you choose which one fits your needs.

Warnings about Juicing

  • You must drink the juice right away to get the full benefits.  If you do want to save some for later, store it in a tightly covered glass jar in the refrigerator.
  • Watch the sugar content of the fruits and vegetables you juice.  Since juicing removes the fiber, sugars are released and quickly absorbed into the blood stream.  Avoid spiking your blood sugar levels by juicing low-sugar vegetables and fruits, such as cucumbers, celery, leafy greens, lemons, ginger, and maybe a small piece of apple or a few grapes if you need a sweetener.

Benefits of Blending / Making a Green Smoothie

  • It tastes great!
  • Smoothies are a great way to sneak some extra veggies to your children (and yourself).
  • You get the whole fruit and vegetable, but the blender does the work of masticating.  This makes it easier to digest.
  • The fiber from whole fruits and vegetables helps keep the sugar reigned in.  Just watch that you don’t go overboard with high-sugar fruit.
  • Fruits help to mask the flavor of leafy greens such as spinach.

Consider when Blending a Smoothie

  • It’s easy to go overboard with the fruits, and before you know it, the sugar content is high.  Stick with low-sugar fruits such as berries.

So which is Better?

Whichever gets you drinking your greens!

However, there’s more to it than that. A juice lets the powerful enzymes and nutrients of your food to be absorbed fast. That’s a problem if you’re juicing high sugary fruits.

But the same can hold for smoothies which are often loaded with more sugary goodies like berries…frozen berries, yum.

Try both, alternating the produce for variety.  Just watch the sugar content of your fruits!

Also take into consideration if you have health issues that you want to help.  Juicing can be very alkalizing and helpful to a sick body.

The scale tips in favor of juicing because (depending on how you juice), you get much more of the nutrients out of it, and they can tend to be less sugary (again depending on how you juice).

So, if you’re making the decision between a juicer and a blender, we recommend getting a juicer as the healthier option. You can check out our top juicer review here.

Comparing Gelato Maker Capacity Fri, 14 Nov 2014 13:38:11 +0000 When selecting a gelato maker, one important feature to consider is bowl capacity.

One thing you don’t want to run into is not being able to make enough gelato for your party or family.

Gelato with Blueberries

How much capacity do you need in a Gelato Maker?

An easy way to figure it out is to consider how many containers of ice cream you would typically buy for an occasion.

A container of ice cream is usually 1.5 quarts. Would you buy just one, or would you get a variety of flavors?

Some of the best gelato makers for home use come with 1.5 qt capacity bowls (same size as store bought ice cream containers).

For an average-sized family or small gathering, a 1.5 quart capacity bowl will usually cover it with left overs to spare.

If you’re looking for a gelato machine with a much larger capacity, keep in mind, you’ll start getting into commercial-sized machines and prices.

The Top 3 Gelato Makers also have the best capacity:

A rising star in the ice cream and gelato making scene is the Whynter ICM-2200LS.

The Whynter produces 2.1 quarts (almost double other makers).

It’s not a dedicated Gelato Maker, but its versatility make it a great gelato and ice cream machine.

Impress your guests with flavor variety!

Now here’s the great thing about self-refrigerating gelato makers, like the DeLonghi GM 6000.

There is no wait time between batches!  You can whip up a batch of strawberry gelato and stick it in the freezer.

Add a batch of chocolate hazelnut to the gelato maker, and in 30 minutes you have two flavors of gelato to offer your guests.

You’ll have enough to serve a crowd without needing a commercial machine.

Another option is to prepare small batches of several varieties of gelato, sorbet, or ice cream ahead of time.

When your guests arrive, greet them with a tantalizing selection from your homemade gelato bar.

It’s just the two of us…

Dinner’s over, and the two of you want something sweet.

Your gelato maker just became your best friend!

With a self-refrigerating gelato maker, there’s no need to plan ahead.

Mix up as much or little as you want.

In about 30 minutes, you’ll have just the right amount of dessert.

No heating up the oven; no leftover cake.

Gelato machines like the DeLonghi work great for smaller batches.

In fact, with less to churn, it freezes even faster!

The answer is . . .

Whether you want to feed a crowd or have an intimate evening at home, you’ll enjoy having a self-refrigerating gelato maker at home.  Breville Smart Scoop Gelato and Ice Cream Maker

If you get one with a 1.25 like the DeLonghi at the less expensive price or the popular 1.5 Breville quart capacity, it will be easy to make as much or as little as you need.
